Ordnung, An Amish Ballet Project - Panel and Performance

  • The HÜG Place 133 Merriman Road Akron, OH, 44303 United States (map)

Join us at The HÜG Place for the co-hosted event, "Ordnung, An Amish Ballet Project." The collaboration between the Amish Heritage Foundation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dance Theatre, and Mahoning Valley Ballet promises an enriching experience.

Highlighting select scenes from the ballet choreographed by Professor Joan Van Dyke, the event begins with an expert panel discussion, "The Right to an Education." Explore the complexities of women’s and education rights with a multidisciplinary panel featuring Professor Van Dyke, Torah Bontrager, Dr. Christian Vaccaro, Dr. Lingyan Yang, Israel Akande, and more.

The ballet, set to pop music from 1972 and 1982, creatively interprets the landmark US Supreme Court case Wisconsin v. Yoder, examining restrictions on Amish children’s education beyond the 8th grade. The panel discussion provides context, addressing the contemporary challenges faced by Amish and Anabaptist communities.

This unique fusion of ballet, panel discussion, and historical exploration opens a dialogue on fundamental questions about education rights and cultural preservation. Join the national conversation on the right to learn and witness the transformative power of art in addressing societal issues.

Reviews from audience members and leaders, such as Dr. Michael A. Driscoll and Dr. Kelly Heider, attest to the emotional depth and thought-provoking nature of the performance and panel discussion. "Ordnung, An Amish Ballet" at The HÜG Place is not merely an event; it's an immersive journey into history, tradition, and the pursuit of knowledge.
